Real Royal Windsor Wedding: Laura & Stephan

With the Royal Wedding only weeks away, I thought I'd kick off the celebrations with a wedding set in Royal Windsor. Gorgeous bride, Laura, chose a classic monochrome theme, and looked like a modern-day Audrey Hepburn with her elegant dress and up-do. I'm serious loving how 'together' the wedding party look in their black and white outfits. Little black dresses are definitely the chicest way to achieve this look - after all, everyone has their favourite LBD! My favourite wedding blogger stealworthy ideas? The monogrammed menus, and the cute cupcakes, plus cutting cake decorated with green-tinted flowers {and made by Laura's mum!}. Gorgeous pictures published with thanks to Kelly from Lola Rose Photography. Don't miss Laura's answers to the Before the Big Day Bridal Questionnaire below. She's included all her top tips for future brides-to-be, plus a fair few wedding DIY ideas.

The Before the Big Day Bridal Q&A - Laura was kind enough to fill in our questionnaire, aimed at helping other brides with their planning process. Feast your eyes on her answers for helpful hints and tips from someone on the other side of her big day!

Where and when did you get married?
25th September 2010 at St Peter’s Church in Iver.

What was your thinking behind choosing the venue and the decoration of the reception?
We held the reception in Windsor at the Hart and Garter Hotel. The hotel is directly overlooking Windsor Castle and the décor fitted our classic ivory and black theme beautifully. We kept our tables very simple with a central low floral arrangement, matching the bridal party flowers, and lots of tea lights. We designed and printed our own menus and place cards to fit in with our black and ivory theme and had everything delivered to the hotel the night before for them to put out. My mum had special permission granted for us to have some photographs taken right outside the castle so we sneaked off for 10 minutes with the bridal party and Kelly got some lovely pictures.

Did you have a theme, colour or motif in mind?
We went for a very classic black and ivory theme with all ivory, white and cream flowers with green foliage and ivy.

Who made your wedding outfit (dress, veil, shoes and accessories), and how did you come to that decision?
I was very lucky because my godmother owns Airs & Graces Bridal Wear in Berkhamsted and organized all the dresses for us. I had seen the dress I wanted before we even got engaged and despite trying 'everything' on as you inevitably do, I stuck with my original choice in the end. The dress was beautiful; it was simple, elegant, and comfortable and worked perfectly with our theme and style. I picked a strapless empire-line dress by Eternity Bride and a full length veil with hand sewn Swarovski crystals. I replaced the veil later in the evening with a beautiful ivory, crystal and pearl flower comb.

What about your husband’s outfit? Where was it from?
Stephan wore a classic black dinner suite with a white shirt, Tiffany cufflinks {a wedding present from the bride}, an ivory silk waistcoat with an ivory ruche and black Barker shoes. He wore a simple ivory rose button hole with a sprig of purple Scottish thistle. Perfect!

And how about your bridesmaids’ outfits?
My maids of honors wore chiffon, empire-line, strapless gowns by D'Zage, a perfect echo of the bridal gown in black with a black overlay band around waist. My younger bridesmaid wore the same style but all ivory with straps. The girls looked absolutely stunning and the dresses are timeless, classic black evening dresses that they will be able to wear again which is great.

What type of cake did you go for, and how did you come to that decision?
Mum made the cakes for us which was lovely. We had the most beautiful 'muffin' sized fairy cakes and a 6" square top cake to cut. All were individually decorated with ivory butter cream and a mix of sugar flowers and pearls to decorate. They were a real talking point and looked so beautiful.

Who was your florist, what flowers did you choose, and how did you come to that decision?
We had our flowers made through Iain Fowles from The Green Room in Berkhamsted (C/o Airs & Graces Bridalwear) arranged our flowers for us. We wanted to keep the flowers all ivory and white so Iain used a mix of Avalanche Roses, Ivory Spray Roses, Ivory Freesias, Green Lysianthus, Thistle & Snow Berry and mixed Greenery. The effect was beautiful and so simple to do. The flowers were simply stunning.

Who was your photographer and how did you choose them?
Choosing the right photographer was very important to us as we were having an intimate wedding later in the day with just our closest family and friends; we wanted the atmosphere of the day to be captured without the photography imposing too much on the time we had to spend with our guests. We found Lola Rose Photography on the internet and were immediately taken with the style of Kelly’s photos. Kelly understood exactly what we wanted and was an absolute pleasure to work with. She captured our day perfectly. Her attention to detail, the service we received from her and the presentation of our photos was amazing. We couldn’t have asked for more.

Who designed your stationery? What did it look like and how did you come to that decision?
We designed and made all the stationery ourselves as we couldn't find anything that we both liked. We followed the black and ivory theme and designed a monogram with our initials. We printed on to a lovely pearlescent ivory card and mounted this onto to a textured black card. The invites were sent out in black, tissue lined envelopes. My sister hand wrote the names and addresses with a white pen. We followed the same design with the menus and order of service. For the order of service we printed onto the same ivory paper and rolled and tied these with black ribbon.

What advice do you have for brides planning their big day?
Time! It really doesn't have to take a year or 2 to organize a wedding. With most people nowadays leading such busy lives, it’s easy to wait and push the date back. The best thing we did was to just 'get on with it'. We organized our wedding in 6 months and that was a really nice time frame to work to.
Relax! Everyone tells you this all the time and I thought I was doing quite well on the day but I did spend most of the day waiting for that 'something' that inevitably goes wrong {which didn't thankfully} and subconsciously checking that the day was going smoothly. Remember…'don’t sweat the small stuff'! You’ve done your bit in the planning and as long as the main things are in place, the day is your time to relax, enjoy and not worry about a thing.
Hair & make-up: I always knew I would do my own make-up but also planned to do my own hair and my bridesmaids hair. Fortunately I have a wonderful hairdresser {Sam Bifolco of Bifolco & Mattey in Langley} who was a bit worried about this idea and said she would pop over in the morning 'just in case' I needed help. By the time Sam got to me in the morning nerves has completely taken over so I was just thankful to sit back and let someone else take control.

Real Flamenco Themed Wedding: Barbara & Aaron

When the rain and grey of the UK gets too much, it's time to dream of a destination wedding. Barbara and Aaron celebrated their big day in Orange County, and added a flamenco wedding theme to hark back to their original chance meeting in Spain. I'm loving the rich red of the flowers they chose, and the dramatic black and white lace motif on the table cloths, plus the addition of suitcases and vintage postcards to reflect their travelling past. Huge thanks to photographer Gabriel Ryan and the fabulous e-zine Utterly Engaged for these gorgeous pictures.

Real Chic London Wedding: Rachel & David

This is one of my favourite weddings of all time, and it's not just because I know the happy couple! Rachel and David are both architects, and their innate sense of style permeates every detail of this London wedding, from their monochrome theme, to the ceremony in Westminster Cathedral and Rachel's AMAZING tiered dress and Jimmy Choo's. They kept up the London theme with vintage taxis and a Routemaster bus, and their wedding reception at the dramatic Dartmouth House. Other wedding details to copy include Rachel's cute shrug, the personalised bridesmaids' bags, the clever tie-the-knot theme, and David's fab top hat. Also loving the fact that Rachel spent months collecting vintage china so each place setting would have a different teacup. Don't miss all of Rachel's top tips and wedding ideas in the Before the Big Day Bride's Questionnaire below. Fabulous photographs published with thanks to Helen Jones Photography.

The Before the Big Day Bridal Q&A - Rachel was kind enough to fill in our questionnaire, aimed at helping other brides with their planning process. Feast your eyes on her answers for helpful hints and tips from someone on the other side of her big day!

Where and when did you get married?
On the 23rd October 2010 in London. We were incredibly fortunate to be able to have our ceremony at Westminster Cathedral, where David was at the choir school when he was younger. We then hired red London Routemaster buses to transport all the guests to Dartmouth House in Mayfair where the reception was held.

What was your thinking behind choosing the venue and the decoration of the reception?
We choose to have a London wedding and along with the idea of a city wedding we wanted to it to look simple, elegant and classical but with a contemporary edge. As we are both architects we wanted to chose architecturally impressive spaces and therefore we wanted to keep decoration simple - this also helped with the budget as the decoration did not need to be over the top or compete with the surroundings but just enough to personalise the venues.

Did you have a theme, colour or motif in mind?
Our theme was ‘tying the knot’ which we came up with in conjunction with my sister, who is a graphic designer - which came in very handy! We used a very simple colour theme of black and white with a highlight of gold. We followed through the theme from our save the dates, which we knotted a piece of black velvet ribbon through each, to the invitations, right through to the orders of service, the wedding breakfast menus and the favours.

Who made your wedding outfit (dress, veil, shoes and accessories), and how did you come to that decision?
My dress was by Kula Tsurdiu which I fell in love as it epitomised the look I wanted for our wedding: traditional enough to look classical, but different enough to be fun and contemporary. My veil for the ceremony was from The White Closet, a gorgeous boutique in Disbury and my pearl headband for the reception was also by Kula. Because it was an autumn wedding I wanted some kind of wrap so found a marabou feather bolero from Sasso to add a bit of glamour and to keep me warm and I treated myself to a fabulous pair of gold Jimmy Choo shoes to pick up the colour theme.

What about your husband’s outfit? Where was it from?
David wore a morning suit, he invested in a new jacket from Gieves & Hawkes and new shoes from Ede & Ravenscroft. We chose a gold tie from Charles Tyrwhitt, which we gave to the two dads and each of the ushers as well as gifts. On the morning of our wedding David’s parents gave him a surprise gift of his top hat, which finished off his outfit perfectly!

And how about your bridesmaids’ outfits?
The bridesmaids dresses were from Alfred Sung, I wanted them to be fun and something I hope they will wear again. They are all the same fabric so look similar but differ slightly in the design to suit each of them individually. Their shoes were from Marks and Spencer, pearl stud earrings from Percy and Flo and bracelets from Sun Studio at Pret-a-Portobello. Their boleros were tracked down by one of the bridesmaids from Warehouse and matched the skirt of my dress perfectly!

What type of cake did you go for, and how did you come to that decision?
My mum made our wedding cake – I was so thrilled when she offered to do it as I didn’t want her to have unnecessary added pressure on the day. We went for a very simple 3-tiered fruit cake with a black ribbon and topped with a small wooden bride and groom figures which I found on Etsy and got personalised with our hair colours and David’s gold tie. It looked and tasted fantastic!

Did you have any favours? What were they? Was there any particular reason why you picked them?
For our favours we made seed packets of forget-me-nots to follow through with the theme – we didn’t want to spend too much on these but thought it would be nice gesture so thought something handmade would work well. My sister printed the card covers and we bulk ordered small plastic bags and seeds from the internet and spent an evening putting them together.

Who was your florist, what flowers did you choose, and how did you come to that decision?
Our florist was Rebel Rebel in east London and we were really impressed with the suggestions that Athena came up with. We wanted primarily white flowers but interspersed with leaves to give the arrangements an autumnal theme (this also again helped to keep the budget down). For my bouquet I chose a mixture of 4 types of my favourite seasonal flowers (Ranuculus, anemones, paper white narcissi and roses) and each of the 4 bridesmaids had a bouquet of a single type of the flowers making up my bouquet. The table centres were also stunning, created using layers of amaryllis, roses and anemones on silver cake stands, to pick up on the vintage theme of the tables and venue for which we collected vintage teacups and saucers for each place setting.

Who was your photographer and how did you choose them?
Our photographer was Helen Jones. Working in a creative industry we were very picky about how we wanted our photographs to look and scoured the internet and wedding magazines for potential photographers. One of our deciding factors, other than the images was that we wanted to get a CD of all the images so that we could use them to put together our own album and we were surprised at the number of photographers that would not do this. In the end we found Helen through a recommendation site who sent us a list of available local photographers – and Helen was the only one we liked.
Did you enjoy planning your wedding?
Errr, well in hindsight I loved planning my wedding however at the time I was surprised at how stressful and time consuming it can become. Though in the end I felt it was really worth all the hard work, all the small touches made our day even more personal to us.

Did you have any DIY projects?
Other than our invitations which were partial DIY and the favours, we also drew our own table plan to reflect both our professions, as an architectural CAD plan of the Dining room with all the tables and chairs laid out and labelled, which we had printed and mounted on an A1 board.

What advice do you have for brides planning their big day?
I made numerous spreadsheets and ‘to do’ lists so that we knew we had thought about all the events of the day and everything that needed to be done and by who. We also wrote lists of instructions for the bridesmaids and ushers, including the plan for the day and all relevant contact numbers that might be needed so that everyone knew what was planned and it meant we could relax and enjoy the day by handing over to someone else. On the big day you really have to relax and enjoy it as it goes by in a whirlwind – I think it was the best and fastest day of my life!

BBD Theme: Ladybirds

There's something romantic about ladybirds. I'm not sure what it is, but I think they're a sweet, fun and feminine motif to use on your big day, particularly if you're having a garden reception. Tradition suggests that your wish is granted if a ladybird lands on you, and seven-spotted ladybirds are the best, because the spots are said to symbolise seven joys. For a dramatic look, choose red and black as your wedding colour palette, and throw in a couple of the gorgeous products below.

Real Wedding: Jennifer & Andrew

The emphasis at this gorgeous wedding was the natural world. Jennifer and Andrew are free spirited souls with a strong sense of green living, and they reinforced this through the detailing on their big day. From the mossy centerpieces, to the national park setting, the bride's eco-friendly engagement ring, and the simple seasonal flower bouquets, the happy couple had one eye on romance and the other on sustainability. Inspired? Check out the Green Bride Guide for advice, use pots of plants rather than cut flowers, buy your bridesmaids' gowns second-hand, and save energy by lighting the ceremony with candles. Throw in a wedding breakfast made with locally grown food, and you'll be the perfect eco-couple. Gorgeous pictures as ever from the girls at Simply Bloom.

Message from the happy couple about Jennifer's eco-friendly engagement ring: "Andrew gave Jennifer a sapphire engagement ring on September 5th, 2008, at the chapel at Camp Comer. The ring contains five stones (one sapphire and four diamonds). All of the stones were ethically sourced: the diamonds from Canada and the sapphire from Sri-Lanka. The white gold used to make the ring is renewed gold, or recycled. Additionally, the company provides each ring in a wooden box and prints all certificates of authentication on recycled paper with recycled ink."
