Real DIY English Fête-Style Wedding: Ailsa & Jono

DIY brides are going to die and go to heaven over this incredible English fete-style garden wedding. Don't miss Ailsa's answers to the Before the Big Day questionnaire, because you're going to feel inspired by every word. It sounds like nearly everyone in Ailsa and Jono's family got involved with making their wedding perfect, and they DIY'd almost everything, from the stationery, to the signs, the table flowers, the musical entertainment, the homemade jam favours, and even a bar for the boys. Jono even grew the berries that went into the jam, and they used homegrown allotment vegetables in their table displays. Other stealworthy ideas include the bridesmaids' pretty Coast dresses, the seriously cool Scandinavian-style yurt marquee, the button badges and the amazing vintage tea-cup topped cake. Whew! That's some serious wedding details! Gorgeous pictures published with thanks to the lovely bride and groom, and the very patient {!} and hugely talented Lee Waymont.

The Before the Big Day Bridal Q&A - Ailsa was kind enough to fill in our bridal questionnaire, aimed at helping other brides with their planning process. Feast your eyes on her answers for helpful hints and tips from someone on the other side of her big day!

Where and when did you get married?
We got married on 18th June 2011. We had our ceremony at Creeksea Place in Essex followed by a reception at my Dad's house just down the road.

What was your thinking behind choosing the venue and the decoration of the reception?
I wanted somewhere where I would have freedom to really personalise the venue. I was really lucky in that my Dad had just moved into a beautiful old farmhouse and it seemed like the obvious choice for what we wanted. We were looking for something a bit different to help make our day unique and I'd originally wanted Mongolian yurts rather than a marquee. But then I discovered Giant Hat Katas – a Scandinavian style tent with a wonderful outdoorsy feel, that come complete with a fire and lifting sides making them adaptable for all weathers.

Did you have a theme, colour or motif in mind? (e.g. green ivy leaves)
We wanted a kind of vintage garden party feel, but with as many of our own personal touches as possible. I play folk fiddle with Jono's Dad at the local pub, so I invited some of my folk friends down to play for a few hours in the afternoon. My sister also plays acoustic guitar and Jono's brother is in a band, so we basically took advantage of everyone!

Who made your wedding outfit and how did you come to that decision?
My dress was made by Suzanne Glenton, a wedding dressmaker who lives locally. I wanted to feel like a bride, but also have something that I felt relaxed and at ease in. I chose a simple bias-cut dress made from satin, with a chiffon layer on the back. The finishing touch was a pair of antique marcasite brooches and a headband which I bought online from Lovebirds bridal jewellery.

What about your husband’s outfit? Where was it from?
It was rented from Moss Bros.

And how about your bridesmaids’ outfits?
I bought dresses from Coast and accessorized them with pearl jewellery and a light pink rose hair piece.

What type of cake did you go for, and how did you come to that decision?
I wanted to cake to reflect the vintage theme so I chose a three tier cake with floral patterns and topped it with a teacup filled with flowers.

Did you have any favours? What were they? Was there any particular reason why you picked them?
My other half loves his allotment so we made homemade jam using fruit harvested from the plot. We also named the tables after seasonal vegetables, and created table centres from vegetables, also from our allotment.

Who was your florist, what flowers did you choose, and how did you come to that decision?
Our florist was Sam from Jacaranda in Burnham-on-Crouch. It was important to us that we supported local businesses, and as old family friend she was the ideal choice for us. Sam made the bouquets and buttonholes. The tables we did ourselves using flowers bought flowers from a wholesaler in Marks Tey.

Who was your photographer and how did you choose them?
Our photographer Lee Waymont was recommended by a friend.

Did you enjoy planning your wedding?
Yes I loved it! It does take over your life for almost a whole year, but the planning is a big part of the whole process and I wanted to have as much input as possible.

Did you have any DIY projects?
My Dad and his girlfriend cleared out one of the out buildings and created a beautiful vintage bar area with hops and dried flowers hanging from the rafters. My Dad's girlfriend also made the napkins, and my mother-in-law grew hanging baskets and troughs to help decorate the garden. Jono is a big fan of Norwich football club and so he collected football photos and posters to create a Norwich FC themed beer tent for the boys.

Who designed your stationery? What did it look like and how did you come to that decision?
One of my bridesmaids is very creative and helped me design the invitations. She also made all the signs at the reception.

What advice do you have for brides planning their big day?
Try and add as many personal touches as possible and just be yourself on the day!

Real Simple & Chic Russet-Themed Wedding: Sarah & Marlon

I love the simplicity of this wedding.  The bride's pearls, the chunky church candles, the white globe lanterns and the flash of colour from the bridesmaids' dresses. Sarah & Marlon tied the knot a couple of weeks ago in the company of their family and friends, and one of our favourite photographers Christine Chang was there to capture their big day.  Huge thanks go to her for these stunning, almost luminous, shots. Gorgeous!

Wedding Theme Idea: Happily Ever After

Did you know that you can actually get married at DisneyWorld?  I know that every girl is supposed to want a Fairy Tale wedding, but isn't that taking it a bit too far? I can't think of anything more likely to ruin the mood than a pair of Mickey ears. On the other hand, there's nothing wrong with addding a few whimsical details to your big day, to add to the atmosphere of romance. Just make sure it's more along the lines of Cinderella's slippers rather than her pumpkin coach.

Real Lemon & Lime Themed Texas Wedding - Liz & Del

You're going to love this lemon and lime themed wedding fresh from the US state of Texas. It's chock-full of inspirational wedding details - many of them cheap and easy to copy for your own big day. If you're looking for Texas wedding ideas, you could also try My Wedding Austin. I'm loving the antique books, the chequered table cloths, vintage lime pop drinks and the homemade wedding cakes. Lovely bride, Liz chose gorgeous green and white for her wedding bouquet, and I'm particularly keen on the giant poppy-seed cases, which conjure up the changing seasons. Most of all I'm head-over-heels with the outdoor wedding venue, set under the sprawling branches with a river nearby. Texans sure know how to throw a party, so if you're considering a destination wedding, check out My Wedding Austin for suppliers and ideas. Huge thanks to photographer Jen Huang for these stunning, golden-lit pictures.

How to Recycle Your Wedding Dress

This is the weekend when I say goodbye to my Delphine Manivet Anatole wedding dress. He's going to a good home - the lovely bride-to-be Kirsty has bought him from me for her Shoreditch wedding next month. It seemed like fate when she got in touch saying that she'd been searching for a second-hand Anatole, and then found mine, only 10 minutes away from her London home. It feels a bit sad to let him go, but in my view it's crazy to keep a wedding dress locked away in your cupboard for twenty years. Let's be honest, fashions change so much, it's really unlikely your daughter is going to want to wear it. And what if you have sons? You don't want to be the psycho mother-in-law who makes your son's fiancé wear your old dress. So much better to make some of the money back, and recycle your big day. What do you think? Are you in favour of selling your gown, or are you going to keep your wedding dress for posterity? If you're interested in recycling your wedding dress, take a look at my advice below.

How to Recycle Your Wedding Dress

1. When you choose your wedding dress make sure you buy a well-known brand. It's lovely to have a dress made to your own design, but it's very hard to sell it afterwards.

2. Try to be careful with your dress on your wedding day. That doesn't mean you can't have fun, just lift up the skirts when you're walking on gravel, or through puddles!

3. A dress without a train is less likely to pick up stains, and will therefore be easier to sell on. That said, my dress had a train, and I still managed to sell it, despite having trod in someone's dropped canapé. The bride-to-be who bought my dress didn't want a train, so she's going to have it adjusted sans stains.

4. Take the dress off after your first dance. It's less likely to get wrecked in the dancing, and you're more likely to be a little tipsy later in the night, and that's when you might spill things down yourself. Also, it means you get to have two bites at the wedding outfit cherry! I changed into a bright pink dress, which was fantastic for dancing the night away.

5. Avoid red wine - for obvious reason!

6. Ask your mum to help you take the dress off at the end of the evening and hang it up for you.

7. Get it dry-cleaned as soon as you can. Stains can set in. I didn't send my dress away to a special dry-cleaner - I just sent it to my usual one. I reckon all the special places are a bit of a rip-off, unless your dress is massively intricate.

8. Wear really high heels. That means that even if you're short, the bride that buys your dress can cut off the dirty hem and have it raised a couple of centimetres.

9. Avoid drunk uncles holding canapes or glasses. Ditto for your 16-year old cousin, who's been allowed to drink champagne for the first time.

10. If you've got a dress to sell, then why not advertise it for free on the Before the Big Day Facebook page? All you have to do is click here, click Like, and then you can post a picture or a video, plus a description.

The Secret Bouquet Trend of 2011

Is it just me, or are bouquets getting bigger? As a wedding blogger I see hundreds of weddings every week, and gradually a trend hovers to the front of my mind. This month, I'm in no doubt that brides are plumping for ever bigger and better {because bigger just is better} bouquets. One of the most hilarious conversations I had in preparation for my own wedding, was when I was trying to explain {in French} to our florist, that I wanted my bouquet to be 'this big' - cue dramatic circular motions with my hands. In the end we resorted to figures, and established that I wanted the 'boule' to be 30cm across, and packed with peonies....cue concerned expression from the florist, as he contemplated the crazy English bride. I got what I wanted {see below}, but my bouquet is still mini compared to some of the monsters from over the pond. What are you going to choose? Big like the ladies below, or small like Kate Middleton's, which barely covered her hands?

Wedding Stationery Ideas

There was a time when I featured tonnes of wedding stationery on this wedding blog, and I'm worried I've been slightly remiss by leaving it out. About a year ago, it was all I could think about, and I spent so long choosing my own wedding stationery, that we nearly sent the invitations out too late. Traditionally they should go out 3 months before the wedding date, but if you're getting married abroad, I'd move that back to four months, and send a Save the Date as soon as you know your venue. That way people can book their flights early. My other recommendation would be to ask people to RSVP fairly quickly. That way you can invite more people before it gets too late. We left it a bit too late, and ended up with only 85 people on our guests list, when my ideal number was 100. If you still haven't chosen your wedding stationery, then check out these gorgeous wedding invitation suites I've found this morning. See what you think, and do add a few comments if you've got any recommendations or advice on wedding stationery.

Carnival Themed Wedding Cake Toppers

Wedding cupcakes are still cool, despite the fact they've been knocking around the world of weddings for a good few years now. So how do you make them stand out from the crowd? Try a fantastic topper, like these cute felt bow ties or wavy flags from Knock Knocking. Both would make a gorgeous addition to a carnival themed wedding, and there's something about their fuzziness that makes me happy.

Secret Wedding Support

First of all I have to admit that I didn't discover Gilsa myself, it was the lovely ladies over at Delphine Manivet who tracked them down. They are, without doubt, the best invisible support in the world, and as they're French, they're somehow chic. Even though, in essence, they're just sticky chicken fillets, when you wear them, you feel sexy. I wore them on my wedding day under my backless, Anatole wedding dress, and no one would have known there were there. Somehow, they even add cleavage - remarkable!

Real Romantic Wedding - Ingrid & Howard

Without question, this is one of my favourite weddings ever. If I had my time again, I'd be choosing the same blush colour scheme, delicate leaf-edged veil and heavenly chrysanthemum bouquets. I'm head-over-heels! The gorgeous Ingrid and Howard celebrated their big day at picturesque San Ysidro Ranch with the help of wedding designer extraordinaire, Angel of Love and Splendor. Plus, Jose Villa was there to take these fabulous pictures, and the flowers were by Kate of Flower Wild Design. There are so many wedding details to steal that I'm at risk of gushing, but let's start with the ribbon-decorated chairs, the pink sand-filled jam jar lights and frosted fruit table decorations. I'm also loving Howard's bright buttonhole against his dark suit, and the dramatic fern and peony napkin decorations. Don't miss the cute little zinc place names, you can just see them in a couple of the pictures. August and autumn brides should pay special attention to the chrysanthemum flower arrangements. They come into season around about now, so they'd be a great addition to your wedding flowers.

Colourful Flower Garlands For Your Flower Girls

Flower girls are a must. They add a delicious dollop of cuteness to your wedding day, and if you send them up the aisle first, everyone will be smiling by the time you take your turn. If you're feeling nervous, they're a great way to take a bit of the focus off the bride, and if you team them with page-boys then you'll be lucky if anyone takes a picture of you and your groom! When it comes to dressing your flower girls, it's all about whimsical romance, and these fabric flower garlands from Pretty Swell totally work that look. They come in every colour you can imagine, and they're full adjustable for big and little people.
